Researcher at the National Research Council – Institute for Ecosystem Study, where she is Head of the benthos laboratory.

Main areas of interest:

basic research (systematics, biology and biogeography of Diptera Chironomids – national taxonomic keys) and applied research (systematic and functional zoology applied to biological monitoring and to the impact of climate change and human activities in high and low altitude river and lake environments).

She is currently working on implementing the Water Framework Directive in Italian waters (national courses designed for the personnel of the ARPA Regional Environmental Protection Agencies, research projects and intercalibration exercises at European level).

She co-operates with the University of Milan, Como and Varese, where she takes seminars and leads field exercises, with the Tridentino Museum of Natural Science, organising theoretical and practical courses at the Limnological Station of Lake Tovel, with the Polish Academy of Science in Krakow (Poland) on themes relating to Oligochaetes in extreme environments (Alps and Nepalese Himalayas), and currently also with the CNR’s Water Research Institute (CNR-IRSA), working on national projects.

She is currently the Italian National Representative for lake macroinvertebrates for implementing the Water Framework Directive. She is a member of the Union System of UNICHIM (Italian National Unification Body) which draws up regulations and guidelines governing methods for macroinvertebrate sampling and analysis, and of the CEN (European Committee on Standardization) working on determining indexes for the ecological classification of lakes based on hydromorphology.
